I couldn't sleep at all, everything was running through my head, losing butternut, the look on Jax's face when I yelled at him. I can't believe I did that, what the hell is wrong with me? I just wanted to be alone and I know he was trying to help but I was so pissed I took it out on him. He probably thinks I hate him.

I don't want to be in that school today, I don't want to be there when they take the only thing I like in that school away, I feel ridiculous for liking a tree but butternut had been there for me and they're just taking it away. Fuck that place! "Mitch you up?" Liv sticks her head in my room "mom thought you over slept, everyone's leaving so..."

"I'm up Liv" I don't budge out of my bed

"You alright?" She walks in

"Great thanks"

"Mitch what's wrong?"

"Nothing and don't keep asking because I'll keep saying nothing"

"Alright fine, mom left you breakfast on the table" she leaves.

No way in hell am I going to school today. Deciding to stay home I go back to sleep after everyone leaves.

Spending my day at home sucks but I suck it up, watching tv and eating cereal my phone rings. Staring at the screen Jessie's name pops up I answer "hi"

"Oh hey!"

"Oh?"

"Sorry I didn't mean to sound surprised I just didn't think you were going to answer"

"Why wouldn't I answer?"

"I don't know, we had a good time on Saturday and you promised another date but I never heard from you"

"I'm an ass" I sigh "I'm sorry Jessie I just have been dealing with stuff and it skipped my mind"

"No it's ok, I get it. I just got tired of over thinking and feeling like you weren't gonna call so I called to hear you say it"

"Say what?"

"That I was pushing my luck, that you're unavailable and I shouldn't try" She stops and I don't know what to say "ok yeah I got my answer, it was nice hanging out with you for one day"

"Wait Jessie!" I say before she hangs up "can I come pick you up?"

"Yeah sure, I'm at school"

"I'm on my way."

Getting ready I get in my car and head to Van Nuys, I don't really know what I'm doing but I need a distraction and Jessie just might be it.

"Hey handsome" Jessie climbs in my car kissing me on the cheek "God I've missed those blue eyes" I smile turning to the wheel, she gasps "is that a smile?! Brooding Mitchell smiling?"

"I smile all the time! And I'm not brooding" I drive away

"You are too! Deep blue eyes, man of few words, you don't say much but I know you have something to say"

"If I have something to say I'll say it"

She seats back looking forward "sure you will." Taking Jessie to a movie we sit in the theater and I can hardly focus on the screen "you alright?" She leans over whispering

"I'm fine"

"Yeah? We're watching a comedy and you haven't laughed once" I don't say anything and she reaches her hand out to me, looking down at her hand I look up at her "come on, take it." Placing my hand in hers she pulls me out of the theater "tell me what's wrong" we stop outside of the doors

There's so much happening I wouldn't know which one to tell her. "There's this tree at school that's being cut down today and I guess it's been on my mind"

"Did you say tree?" She smiles

"No forget it I knew you'd think it was stupid"

I go to open the door but she stops me "I'm sorry I didn't mean to smile just please keep talking"

"Butternut, the trees name was butternut and I used to hang out under it during lunch or free period and it used to help me a lot. I'm not a tree hugger or anything but butternut was kind of special"

"Why are they cutting it down?"

"New field"

She hugs me "I'm so sorry Mitch"

"Thanks I just wish I could see it one more time"

"Well what time does school end?"

Looking at my watch "2 hours"

"Then come on! Let's go spend those hours under butternut saying goodbye"

It sounds like an insane idea but fuck it I've got nothing to lose. "What if we get caught?" I ask as I'm driving towards my school

"Then we'll say we go there it's not all a lie, worst they can do is tell us to go back to class." She grins

"You're kind of scary."

Getting to school I sneak Jessie in, it's 5th period right now so we rush down the hall towards the backyard. Exiting the building again Jessie and I walk towards Butternut "wow" Jessie gasps as we get closer to Butternut "it's a beautiful tree" I can't tell if she's only saying this for my benefit but she seams to really like it.

"I like to sit here and just clear my head" we sit under the tree looking out at the field "no one else likes it back here, well except for Jax, he's always back here with me"

"Where's he now?"

"Probably in class, or at the mall with Summer"

"Your ex? Why would he be at the mall with your ex?"

"They're best friends"

She chuckles "fun world you live in." Sitting under the tree for the next two hours Jessie and I opened up to each other about a lot, well actually she told me about herself and I listen "you go to a nice high school, everyone here must be so rich"

"We do ok"

"Look at the parking lot over there" she points  "you do more than ok"

"They're just cars"

She smiles "you know Mitch you come off as this dark, mysterious guy but I know your type"

"Oh boy what's next? You're gonna start listing everything you think you know about me"

"Why would I do that when you already know yourself, it's like me saying hey Mitch meet yourself, Mitch"

"No one's ever tried to figure me out-"

"Hey! Why aren't you kids in class?!" We jump hearing a voice behind us "get to class!" The security guard yells.

Rushing back inside the school Jessie is laughing, as we're walking through the halls the bell rings "oh shit! What does that mean?" She jumps

"School's over" grabbing my hand we run trying to make it to the door but we're ambushed my people coming out of their classes. "Come on this way!" I pull Jessie turning down a hall trying to avoid everybody, as we're running we run past Summer walking hand in hand with her boyfriend Cam, and Jax who's eyes land right in mines. I continue to run and I can just feel him staring at us.

We finally make it out to the car "that was so fun!" Jessie climbs in laughing, I can't stop thinking about Jax's face when he saw us. I sit behind the wheel tying to figure it out "hey you ok?" Jessie places a hand on my shoulder

"Yeah fine, come on let's get something to eat."
