‘Oi… where have you been?’
Greg asked, concern written all over his features as I made my way inside the car.
‘Just…saw a friend.’
I beamed at him like an idiot thinking about Harry.
He gave me a quizzical look and eventually shrugged it off and then we were on the road again.
In my seat, as I sat peacefully, I gazed out of the window and thought about what happened back there.
I met Harry, my tormentor in the past, saw a very different side of him, and before I even know it, I forgave him for everything.
We established a weird sort of bond between us after our little chat and it actually felt good.
It felt like I can breathe finally.
Like a big cork has been plucked out of me and now I can freely enjoy things.
A smile spread across my lips as I thought about it.
And then, there came that part.
When we talked about him.
Zayn.
Oh, how I wish I could hear his voice again.
Yes, he hurt me but that’s in the past.
And to think of it, I managed to forgive Harry.
Surely, I can forgive Zayn as well, right?
Doing otherwise must mean I am a terrible person.
A bad Niall.
I mean, Harry claims he had changed completely.
And it was all because of me.
I couldn’t help the longing I feel towards Zayn.
Well, before he dropped that bomb saying he’d practically made me blind… he did help me.
Made me feel somewhat complete during our days together.
He felt like home.
And I so badly want to feel that again.
‘Home.’
I mumbled under my breath.
‘I’m sorry… what? What’s that, Niall?’
Greg asked as if alarmed he missed what I was saying.
‘Nothing.’
I assured him.
I sighed and stared back outside again.
We were now headed towards our new house Greg had managed to buy with his savings.
We were just passing by a sign which indicated how many more kilometers we’d still have to travel before we reach town when the thought crossed my mind.
Thanks to that sign which was decorated by a floral layout reminding me of Hawaii.
And when we talk about Hawaii, what comes to mind first?
Yes.
The beach!
‘Home.’
I declared.
‘Yes, we are almost there. You should see our front lawn, it’s amazing what our neighbor, Mrs. Guerrero did. I would never do half as awesome as she did. And, oh! Your room! Niall, you should definitely see it. It’s so cool. You’ll love it. And of course there’s—‘
‘The beach!’
I blurted out cutting Greg’s sentence.
He laughed.
‘No, there’s no beach, Niall. I mean, it’s a pool. But you can call it a beach if you want to.’
‘I wanna go to the beach!’
I demanded.
‘What?!’
‘I said I wanna go to the beach!’
I repeated.
‘But I thought you want to go check out the house?’
‘We can do that later. Let’s go to the beach first, please?!’
‘Niall…’
‘Greg… for me… please… you know how I love it there… please… I wanna go there first… I promise it won’t take long… I just wanna see it… I miss it, you know.So… please?’
I begged him with the most convincing voice I produced.
He produced a sigh and then shot me a look.
‘Why?’
‘I just want to.’
‘But…you just got out. Wouldn’t you want to come and see your new home?’
‘I would after you take me there.’
‘Uggggh! Blind or not, you’re still the same demanding little brother.’
‘Is that good or bad?’
I asked innocently.
He laughed and ruffled my locks playfully.
I smiled goofily at him playing the innocent-puppy-dog-eyes thing on him.
Thankfully, it worked.
I know Greg couldn’t resist my eye trick.
Oh, have I never been so glad I have these eyes back again.
‘Fine.Fine. I’ll take you there. But.For only half an hour.Deal?’
‘Deal!’
I cheered in my seat as I my heart pounded in excitement.
You see, I wanted to go to the beach…the same beach my family went to…and well…the same place when I nearly died.
It’s just, I wanna go to that place for everything it gave me.
Love, pain, strength.
Hearing a familiar ruffling sound of coconut and palm tree leaves, taking in the aroma of the seawater, witnessing a great white bed of sand welcomed by a beautiful blue horizon, I know this is it.
I stepped out of the car as soon as it parked and a strong breeze of fresh air attacked my senses.
And it felt so damn good.
‘Be back by four!’
Greg shouted as I walked away from the car.
He resisted on coming with me because he wanted a nap.
I was a bit glad by that excuse because I really want to come here by myself, just to think for a little while.
I found myself sitting on the sandy ground making myself comfortable.
People crowded the place but it was still beautiful and peaceful.
Kids playing, people chatting, lovers kissing, men and women drinking, some are eating, boys surfing, boats sailing, birds chirping and flying, people playing music was all my eyes could see.
I suddenly realized I was staring at a man playing with a child.
Probably his son.
They looked so happy together.
You could tell from the sound of their laughter and the sight of their eyes shining with bliss.
I smiled to myself thinking how fun it must be.
The man plays with his son with a ball.
The son tries his best to catch it from his hold.
But every time he does, he trips on the sand causing the dad to laugh.
The son gets up and the same scene repeats.
I turned my attention away when I heard a sound nearby.
I looked to where the sound was and I saw a guy playing with his guitar as he was surrounded by a little crowd.
The song was familiar and I can’t help my ears to listen to hear his version of it.
“You carried on so long, you couldn’t stop if you tried it.
You’ve built your walls so high that no one could climb it.
But I’m gonna try,
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now girl, take it off now girl
I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight?”
My concentration upon the singing man was abruptly interrupted by an object hitting my feet.
I looked at it and it was a rubber ball.
I looked around and I saw the man and the child who was playing earlier looking at my direction.
They must’ve thrown it harder than usual.
I smiled at them and immediately got up picking the ball.
I was walking towards them and I saw a clearer picture on what they looked like.
The kid was maybe two years old and the guy, well, he’s probably about my age.
‘Here.’
I held the ball in front of me and looked at the man.
He had his hair in a quiff, he had short facial hair, his lips were full and so pinkish, his eyebrows were thick and his eyes, they were gorgeous.
Hazel brown.
That feature of his was probably what made him handsome.
He was completely attractive.
A weird feeling occurred in my stomach as I stared at those orbs.
It felt almost like I’ve seen them before.
I hadn’t realized I still got the ball in my hands and he was not taking it.
I looked back at him again and I can’t explain what I’ve felt.
He was staring back at me.
As if he was surprised.
As if…I dunno, he knows me.
‘Uhm, here’s your ball.’
I repeated but still baffled by that man’s behavior.
‘Niall?’
He replied.
I was taken aback with surprise.
He knows my name?
But wait, that voice.
That familiar thick manly soothing British accent.
I just had to take a moment to remember who it was from.
But his face…I’ve never seen him before in my life.
Who is he?
‘Is it really you?’
He continued.
‘E-excuse me sir, but do I know you?’
Suddenly, the ball in my hands was snatched by small hands.
I looked at the little kid as his eyes lit up as the ball became his again.
‘Daddy Zaync’mon!’
The child cheered.
And I was left wide-eyed.
I couldn’t believe my ears.
I looked back at the man again.
The voice, the eyes.
Of course.
‘Z-zayn?’
