quick note: I don't know anything about how adoptions work and how the system for it works either. I'm basically just guessing how it all works at this point

"What on earth do you think you two are doing?!" Miss McDougall shouted at us after she drug us downstairs and forced us to sit on the couch. I sighed softly and sat back against it, listening to her scolding us about how dangerous it was for us to go about on the streets at this hour and whatnot. If she was furious now, wait until she found out we had been doing this for nearly a month now. I'm sure her face would turn a shade of pink out of frustration and her accent would possibly go higher. Miss McDougall was a nice lady, but I could only handle so much of her.
"Do you realize that I am responsible for you two?! Anything could have had happened out there and I would have never known!" She said, her arms folding over his chest. "I would have never expected this out of you two, especially you Austin Carlile. You've been here long enough to know better." I glanced at him to his eyes casted down to the floor in almost some sort of shame, and I know she didn't mean the way she said it, him being here long enough, but I couldn't help but feel some kind of anger towards her. Even if she didn't mean it that way, it was a low blow and I almost wanted to yell at her to take it back. But I kept silent. I bit my tongue and continued to endure her rant and scolding.
By the time Miss McDougall believed we had a good earful, she sent us back to our rooms. I was surprised that no one had heard her yelling, but then again they were probably used to some of the stuff that went around here by now.
Austin didn't say a word to me as we climbed the stairs and headed down the hallway. At first I thought he was just being silent because he didn't want to say anything while Miss McDougall could possibly hear us, but by the time we were out of earshot, he still didn't say anything.
"Hey," I grabbed his hand, making him stop the walk to his room. Austin sighed and turned to me, not even looking up. "What's wrong?" I asked, touching his cheek.
"Nothing, okay? I just...I want to get to bed." He said, pulling away from me. I frowned and grabbed his hand again. Surely he couldn't be upset at me, could he? I didn't do anything wrong, unless he was upset at me for letting him take us out tonight, but how was I supposed to know that this was going to happen? I didn't know that when we crawled through the window again that Miss McDougall was going to be stood there.
"There's something wrong and I want you to tell me." I demanded in a whisper. I kept in mind we were in the hallway and that there were people still sleeping.
"Alan please, just let me go." Austin said, shaking his head.
"No, I want to know what's bothering you." I told him, tugging him closer. He let out another sigh, slowly raising his head. He was about to speak when we heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and instantly we both quietly ran into his room and shut the door without a sound. I was surprised when I didn't hear Mike's loud snoring, so that led me to guess he was in Tony's room and Vic was more than likely in my room with Kellin.
We waited in silence as whoever this was passed by Austin's room and went into one, closing the door. We both seemed to let out breaths that we were holding. Before I could speak, Austin flicked on the lights so we no longer were stood in the dark.
"Are you going to tell me, or am I going to have to somehow get the truth out of you?" I asked, watching as Austin removed his shirt and pulled on another one.
"I don't know... I just didn't like the way Miss McDougall was yelling at us, and I guess I've always been that way. I hate when someone yells at me because it...it just reminds me of my dad and all the shit he used to say to me while he was drunk," he said, plopping down on his bed with a sigh. "It must sound stupid, or whatever, but that's just how I feel."
"It's not stupid, Aust. It's okay, I get how you feel." I said, joining him on the bed. I grabbed his hand and laced his fingers with mine before kissing his cheek.
"You're really adorable, you know?" Austin said, kissing the side of my head. I grinned and pulled him down beside me, so we were face to face. I kissed him gently, pushing him so he was on his back before climbing on top and straddling his waist. Austin chuckled and wrapped his arms around my torso, keeping me close as we kissed. My feelings for him were so strong, I knew that. And although this place was a hell for me, I was glad I was here, because I had him and my friends.
。。。
The next day after school, all of us spent it the afternoon relaxing on the couch. It was fairly quiet, except for the little children running around and playing. I wasn't exactly sure what we were watching either, but whatever it was, it had Jaime and Mike laughing their asses off. My head was resting on Austin's shoulder while his hand rested on my thigh, his thumb running back and forth absentmindedly. Strangely enough, it was making me become sleepy.
"I don't understand what's so funny." Austin whispered to me quietly as Mike and Jaime erupted into another fit of giggles, I grinned and shook my head.
"Those two are idiots, so anything to them is funny." I whispered back, Austin chuckled, causing his entire body to vibrate, as he kissed the top of my head.
"Alan, can I speak with you?" Miss McDougall came into the living room where we were. Slowly as I sat up and nodded, the worst of thoughts running through my head as I stood and followed her. I glanced back at the other warily as Miss McDougall led us into the, what I liked to call, Questioning Room. It was where I was that day when my father barged in and made my nightmares come true.
Before I stepped further into the room, I froze. Inside was Halsey, Sergeant McKinnon, John and Samantha- the couple that was asking questions the same day that, again, my father barged in.
"What- What's going on?" I questioned, slowly stepping further inside when Officer McKinnon beckoned me too. Samantha and John smiled at one another before smiling at me.
"They're here to officiate your adoption." Halsey said, smiling.
Right then and there, it felt like my whole world crashed and burn, but then slowly began to get rebuilt.
