I woke suddenly when I felt someone shaking my shoulder. I jumped away quickly, my heart hammering and my eyes wide in fear. I calmed down though when I noticed that it was just Miss McDougall and a warm smile on her face.

"You've got a visitor sitting outside, he wants to speak with you." She said softly and quietly. I nodded and watched as she left out of the roof quietly. I sighed and rubbed at my eyes, rolling out of bed and pulling on a long sleeved shirt and some shoes before heading downstairs and outside where I saw Sergeant McKinnon, a bag of food and drinks beside him and a tennis ball in his hand as he bounced it against the stone steps that led into the orphanage. He turned and looked at me when he heard the door opened and he smiled. I grinned back and sat down.

"I got you some breakfast kid," he said, grabbing the bag and shuffling through it until he pulled out a sausage biscuit from McDonald's and soda.

"What are you going here?" I asked, eating on the biscuit hungrily.

"I wanted to check on you, make sure you were doing okay after what happened with your mom." He said looking at me, I nodded slowly.

"I'm fine, honestly. I'm over it, but I'm still pretty pissed off." I said.

"She showed up at the station the day beforehand and demanded for someone to show her where you were. At first I didn't think that this woman was your mom, so we took her through briefing and eventually everything checked out. I know it must've been a major surprise." He said, I nodded quickly.

"She hasn't been in my life for five years, she up and left me here with him, knowing full and well that things were going to change. He loved her a lot and she just left because he wasn't what she wanted."

"You can't just expect her to come here and say that she's coming to get you back. She's been through a lot of trouble that could mess up it for her to claim you back."

"What do you mean?" I was confused now.

"When we were searching and making sure that this woman was in fact your mother and not just some crazy woman, it was on her record that she had been arrested for DUI's on several accounts. She was also arrested for the possession of marijuana that's illegal where she's been staying at, wherever that is," he told me. "And to put it very blunt, you didn't expect after five years of leaving you dumped and alone that she was just going to come back and take you away, did you?"

Honestly yes, I did. I always had the thought that when and if my mom came back, she was going to take me with her and not ever leave me behind again. I actually thought that she loved me enough that she would do anything in her power to get me back, but obviously she didn't. She still didn't care, not even after seeing her own flesh and blood in an orphanage.

"Can you blame me?" I muttered quietly.

"No, I can't," he said. "Listen, kid, this life is going to be full of disappointments, your mom is not what's best for you right now and I know you don't want to be here and you don't want to be with a better family, but your mom and your dad have hurt your, both physically and mentally, the quicker you see that the easier this becomes and the easier it will be for you to get past all of this."

I hated him. He was right and I hated him.

I rolled my eyes and sighed, tossing the wrapper into the bag and watched as a few cars passed by. It was kind of early into the afternoon and it was warm even though it was cold.

"I've been here for a month. What if... what if I-I never get another chance at having a family? What if one family sees me and they don't want me because of the things I've been through?" By this point my eyes were watering and my bottom lip was quivering.

"You won't be like me, you'll get your chance at having a new life and a new family, it's only been a month. There's still chances out there, you just gotta keep telling yourself that."

I didn't say anything, only sat there in silence and watched as some cars drove by or people on the other side of the street walked past. Sergeant McKinnon sighed as the radio attached to his uniform went off with the dispatch needing someone to check something out.

"I'll bring you some lunch later kid, but I gotta get going." He said, I nodded and watched as he stood and gathered the bag and empty drinks. He looked at me with a smile. "Take care of yourself, enjoy everything now and if needed, punch another kid in the face, live a little."

"I'll try to find someone to punch in the face." I said grinning. Sergeant McKinnon chuckled and ruffled my hair before going down the steps and to his car and getting in. I watched as he drove off and left, leaving me still sitting on the stairs.

I still wanted to leave this stupid place. Sometimes I regretted ever opening my mouth that night, even if it meant still being with my dad, I wouldn't be here and honestly, I would be okay with that.
