Jungkook sat collapsed beside the charred remains of the car, face soaked in sweat and tears, chest heaving with sobs. His fingers, scraped and trembling, were still clutching the burnt frame like it might give him an answer.
"Jimin," he whispered brokenly. "Why did you leave me...?"
The world was a blur-sirens howling in the distance, smoke thick in the air, people shouting, crying... but all Jungkook heard was silence inside him. A deafening void.
Then-
"Jungkook..."
A voice.
So soft, almost lost in the chaos.
His body froze.
His ears strained.
No, he was imagining it. His mind was playing tricks-trying to comfort him.
But then again, louder, clearer-
"Jungkook!"
His eyes snapped open.
That wasn't in his head.
He turned around, frantic, scanning the street, the sidewalk, the surrounding smoke and crowd with wild eyes.
And then he saw it.
Him.
Through the gray haze of smoke, stepping out from behind a tall cement pillar-
Jimin.
Disheveled. Dirty. Pale. A small cut bleeding from his forehead, his white shirt smeared with dust and soot. But standing.
Alive.
"Jimin...?"
Jungkook whispered like the wind had knocked out of him. His voice cracked as he stumbled to his feet again, almost forgetting how to breathe.
"Jimin!!!"
Jimin's face crumpled as he ran-legs barely holding him, eyes already full of tears.
"JUNGKOOK!"
They collided in the middle of the street, Jungkook wrapping his arms around Jimin like he'd never let go again, both of them gasping, trembling, crying in disbelief.
Jungkook buried his face in Jimin's shoulder, clutching at him like a drowning man clinging to life. "You're alive-oh my god, you're alive-Jimin, I thought-I thought I lost you..."
Jimin cupped the back of Jungkook's head, lips trembling as tears soaked his cheeks. "I noticed something is wrong with the car-I didn't know what to do-I stepped back and hid behind the pillar-and then it exploded-!"
"I couldn't reach you-I couldn't move-I thought I lost you forever-" Jungkook's voice cracked into a sob. "But then I felt my legs. I stood. Jimin, I stood for you."
Jimin pulled back, gasping, eyes wide. "You... stood?"
Jungkook blinked, just realizing again that he was still standing-still holding Jimin up without support.
They both stared at each other for a second-speechless.
Then Jimin let out a shaky laugh, placing his palms on Jungkook's cheeks, overwhelmed. "You miracle boy... you stood up just to run to me."
"I'd cross hell for you," Jungkook breathed.
"I saw," Jimin whispered, pressing their foreheads together. "And I came back."
Jungkook tilted Jimin's chin and kissed him-hard and desperate. A kiss that tasted like fire and smoke and tears. A kiss that said you came back to me.
And Jimin kissed him back just as fiercely-hands clinging to Jungkook's jacket, as if afraid to wake up from a dream.
Behind them, firefighters were still hosing down the last flames. People watched in stunned silence. The entire street was still caught in chaos-but in that tiny space where they stood, hearts beating in sync, it was only peace.
Only love.
Only them.
___
That Night - At Home
The house was silent.
Too silent.
The kind of silence that settles in after chaos, when adrenaline has crashed and only the raw, aching aftershock remains.
The hospital had cleared Jimin - just minor bruises and ringing in the ears. They said he was lucky. Jungkook didn't believe in luck. Not after watching the car explode.
Now, they were home, curled up in their bed, but neither could sleep.
Jungkook lay on his side, one arm wrapped tightly around Jimin's waist, his other hand tracing soft circles over Jimin's back under the oversized shirt he wore. Jimin's cheek was pressed into Jungkook's chest, the steady beat of his heart a quiet lullaby - but his eyes were wide open, unblinking.
"I keep hearing it," Jimin whispered after a long silence. "That sound."
Jungkook's arms tightened.
"I know," he murmured. "Me too."
Jimin tilted his face up to look at him. "I could've died today."
"Don't say that," Jungkook whispered, voice thick with emotion.
"But it's true."
Jungkook's jaw clenched, tears building again. "I thought I lost you. I couldn't even move... and I just-" His voice broke. "I thought I'd never hold you again."
"You did move," Jimin whispered. "You ran. You stood up and ran for me."
Jungkook blinked down at him, eyes brimming. "Only because of you. Only because I thought I'd never see you again."
Jimin slowly cupped his cheek, thumb stroking the tear that had fallen. "Don't cry, my love."
"I'm not crying," Jungkook tried to joke, voice shaking.
"You are," Jimin smiled gently. "And it's okay."
They were quiet for a while.
"I never want to go a day without touching you again," Jungkook whispered, burying his face in the crook of Jimin's neck. "I never want to wake up without you beside me."
"You won't," Jimin said softly. "I'm not going anywhere."
Jungkook pressed a trembling kiss to Jimin's neck, then another to his collarbone, breathing him in like he was air.
Jimin shifted up, cupping Jungkook's face with both hands. Their foreheads touched, breaths mingling.
"I love you," Jimin said, voice firm despite the tears clinging to his lashes.
"I love you more than life," Jungkook replied, his voice low and broken, "and I'll protect you with mine."
Their lips met, soft and slow, not rushed or hungry - just deep. Real. A silent promise in the darkness.
