When I got in the house, I shut the door behind me calling out to my Mom. She called back, welcoming me home. I set my bag down to take my shoes off. After I placed them on the little shelf where they belonged I grabbed my things again and went up the stairs. When I opened my door, I immediately sighed. That's right...I still hadn't cleaned my room up. Trying to ignore it for now, I went to my desk and pulled my homework out of my bag.
I sat down and started reading through some things that I had to for math. Mostly, I was going over notes and writing down the date on my paper. When it came down to actually doing the work, I got about a quarter of the problems done before I started to get a little distracted. I hated having a messy room. I could handle things here and there, but it kind of looked like a tornado ripped through my room. If my Mom came up here and saw it she'd probably get kind of mad.
So, I set my pencil down and pushed myself away from the desk. I got up and began picking clothes up off of the floor, tossing them into my laundry basket. There wasn't really any garbage in the room, just some water bottles, which I threw into the little wastebasket next to my desk. After cleaning that up, I started stacking the board games up and took them out of my room back to the pantry across the hall. When I opened it and shoved them in there, I noticed something shiny sticking out on the top shelf. I reached up and pulled on it to see a foil table cover.
It was probably something left over from a birthday party or something. As I stared at it and wondered what party we had used it for, I suddenly remembered that I had to ask my Mom about the party Isaac was having. I tossed the package back on the top shelf and shut the door, hopping down the stairs. My Mom was bent over the freezer, looking for something. Probably stuff for dinner.
"Hey Mom, I have a question." I said when I saw her. She looked up at me, then went back to digging for whatever it was.
"What is it?" She asked me.
"Are we doing anything for New Years?" I asked her, hoping she wouldn't say we were.
"Hmm...I don't think so." She pulled out a bag of frozen chicken. "Why?"
"Well, my friend Isaac is having a New Years party, and I was just wondering if I could go." I explained. She nodded as she listened.
"Is this party just kids or...?" She questioned.
"No, his parents and other family and friends will be there." I told her.
"Oh, I see. So it's not some crazy teen party then." She laughed and I shook my head.
"No, it's for everyone in general. He invited me today."
"Well, alright...there's a condition though." Of course there was. She was always giving me 'conditions'. Usually they weren't too bad though. "I want you to get your room cleaned up. I went in there today and turned right back around. It's pretty bad."
"Oh." I laughed. "I was just cleaning it, actually."
"Good. It looked like a shipwreck in there. Anyways, if you get that all don then I don't see why you can't go." She ripped open the bag of chicken. I nodded and then turned away. I stopped myself and turned around as I remembered something.
"I'll need a ride." I told her. She nodded. "Oh, and we'll probably have to give Kizumi one too."
"That fine, honey." She told me to find out the times and such and fill her in, and I turned away again to head back to my room, but this time she stopped me. "That reminds me...do you remember Yuji? Back from when we lived in that little blue house down by the creek?" I took a moment and tried to remember, and suddenly the face of a young boy popped into my head. I nodded.
"Yeah...I remember him a little bit. Why?" I asked.
"He's actually moving in not too far from here." She told me.
"Really?" I said, thinking back on him a little more.
"Yeah." She pulled out a pan for the chicken and greased it a little. "I was thinking that since you two used to hang out that maybe you'd give him a hand getting used to the school and such. Just show him around, you know? It not easy transferring to a new school so far into the year."
"Sure, I will." I smiled. She gave me a smile back and said,
"Great...that's all I wanted to tell you." She sent me off and I went back to my room and finished picking up my stuff. I didn't really take much time trying to make my bed since it was already evening anyways, but besides that, my room looked a whole lot better. Especially after I had picked up all the board games. I think that was what was making my room look so cluttered. We'd left pieces out and stuff. I took one more look around my room and then plopped myself back into my chair.
I picked up my pencil again and looked where I left off on my homework. As I started doing it, I thought back on Yuji. I hadn't seen him since we were kids. It'd be nice to see him again and talk about what we'd been doing. He probably looked different now, too. I know I did. I used have such a baby face and lighter hair than I do now. Either way, I was kind of excited to see him again. We'd gotten along well when we were younger. Hopefully we still would.
