Chapter Three
Sean walked to Quinn's home with a weary pace. He had to be mistaken, they had to be pulling his leg or something. This was just too weird. Who even believes in ghosts nowadays anyway?
He double checked the address on his phone, Quinn had sent the text before he had a chance leave school. This made the only good excuse he could think of pretty impossible to pull off. Continuing down the street he noticed a dilapidated house. The Shutters were either hanging by single hinges or missing entirely. Where there was grass, it was in need to be cut but it was mostly dead from an obvious lack of care. The closer he came to the front door, the more certain he was that this is Quinn's house.
No wonder the kid thought his friend was a ghost.
He walked up the sagging steps to the front door. Filled with uncertainty, he nervously knocked on the door only to feel the paint chip as his hand tapped at it. Sean hoped that his knock was quiet enough that the residents wouldn't hear, giving him a reason to turn tail and run without losing his pride.
No such luck.
Quinn opened the door quickly, almost as if he had been waiting just on the other side.
“Good, you made it.”
“Yeah....” Sean didn't see how this was good. Either he was being made fun of or he was nuts.
“Well come on. Ghost is waiting in my room. He wanted to greet you too, but I figured you were probably freaked enough as it is....” Quinn babbled the entire way to his room.
Sean couldn't help but notice the inside of the house reflected its exterior. Faded and peeling wall paper, tiles cracked or missing in spots on the floor. Oddly enough, even though the décor was lacking in care and maintenance, the place was pretty clean. No dust bunnies and cob webs.
“....He might be pouting when we get in there, don't worry though he'll brighten up. We are pretty excited and nervous as well.”
Quinn opened the door to his bedroom, briefly wondering what was spawning this blabber mouth he had. He never talked this much. Thankfully his mom was out of the house doing some random thing or another. Quinn felt they needed no interruptions and he definitely did not want to deal with his mother today, or any day really.
Ghost rushed over as soon as the two other boys entered the room. The pouting no where to be seen.
Sean took a brief glance around the room, noticing the drastic change from the rest of the house. This room was perfectly put together. No damage to be seen, everything in its place and was very well cared for.
“Hey Sean.” Ghost said excitedly. Practically bouncing up and down.
'Can ghosts bounce?' Sean though randomly as the description of the other boy's actions came to him.
“H-hey.”
“You still don't think I'm really a ghost do you?”
“Well....I have a few doubts.”
'Like possibilities of a projection, smoke and mirrors....anything that wasn't a 'real ghost.' Sean thought wearily to himself.
“Didn't you get that out of you system in school? Or would you like put your hand through him some more?” Sean knew Quinn was only joking to lighten the mood but he still felt peeved. He had plenty of right to be cautious, this stuff doesn't happen to him everyday!
“Hey, sorry, you can test all you what if it will help.” Quinn tried his best to make Sean more at ease. “Come on let's just get comfortable and talk about ourselves for a while. Get to know each other.”
“Yeah, ok.” That seemed pretty normal of a thing to do in Sean's eyes, and normal was what he needed right now.
They talked about nonsense for a while. About how Quinn and the ghost meet years ago, what teachers they liked and disliked. Even their favorite subjects in school. Quinn, it seemed like them all, while Ghost and Sean preferred English and History.
It was as though they grew closer with every passing hour. Soon, however, their reason for meeting came back into focus.
“But why can you see me now, if you didn't before? That's what I don't get. I mean Quinn has seen me for years now.”
“I don't know, maybe you've become a stronger entity?” That sounded lame to Sean's ears. He knew nothing about the supernatural or paranormal. Only the movies he'd seen provided any incite.
“I don't think so, if that's the case why would only you see him. Has anything changed in your life recently?”
“Not really.”
Sean and Quinn started to search the web for any clues. Sean had literally just typed “seeing ghosts” into the search engine. The first few sites were basic ghost conspiracies and suspected hauntings, but soon he found something interesting.
“Well this could be it....” The two other boys came quickly to look at Sean's laptop. “This site says that certain traumatic experiences and injuries to the head can cause paranormal sitings.”
“What does that mean?” Ghost asked curiously.
“A few days ago I was in a car with some buddies, and when the driver swerved to miss a dog or something I cracked my head off the window and blacked out. They said I got a minor concussion at the hospital. Then I came to school and see you the next day. That's pretty coincidental if you ask me. I didn't even think about it at first, I mean the Doc said I was fine.”
Quinn and Ghost shared a glance and agreed with Sean. It fit too perfectly to be anything but the cause.
Sean thought for a moment and then it dawned on him, if he could see the ghost because of that, then what happened to Quinn. The thought of something happening to the kid upset him a little. It was weird but he felt so comfortable with these two after just meeting them. Sean didn't know why but he couldn't deny it to himself.
It seemed Ghost had a similar though process because he soon asked, “Quinn, what was your traumatic experience or head trauma?” Ghost felt a little sad that he might not know about his best friend's injury.
Quinn's eyes grew dimmer, but he started in on his tail, “When I was 9 my father left my mom. He said he couldn't take anymore of her crap and just walked out on us. I wasn't really that upset because, well, I knew he wasn't my real dad. My mom didn't even know who that was.
“Well my mother had never been a very kind and caring person, but when he left her, she kind of, kind of freaked. She started cussing at me. Telling me that I wasn't a good enough kid to keep my parents together. And when I told her he wasn't really my parent, she-she started to beat me. Worse then any punishment I had had so far. She threw me against the walls and into furniture and....” Quinn swallowed thickly. Telling the story of the abuse's beginning was difficult.
“And?” Sean ask softly. He did not like seeing this boy so sad.
“And, she threw me down the basement stairs. L-leaving me down there for a few hours.” Ghost gasped, he had never heard of this and he felt like he was about to cry. His poor Quinn had always suffered from his mother, but Ghost never knew it started so horribly.
“It was dark and damp and I could feel the blood oozing from my head when I finally came to. When my mother calmed down she brought me to the hospital, saying I tripped. I was too afraid to say anything and in too much pain. I ended up with a broken leg, two fractured ribs and a concussion. It was about three or four months later when I was well enough that I went to work with her, because no one could watch me. Then I met you.” Quinn gave a small smile to Ghost, reassuring his friend.
“You never told me....” Ghost still couldn't put it out of his mind.
“I didn't want you to know about it really. It hurt for me to think of it and it was bad enough that you saw it happen a few other times. I knew you got upset when you couldn't help me. I didn't want to put you through that any more then necessary. You are my best friend and I want you to be happy.”
Sean couldn't help but feel moved by that. He knew his parents neglected him in a way and it hurt sometimes, but at least it was never physical. He looked closely at Quinn, taking in his dark hair and chocolate eyes. Quinn was a good looking kid really. He had such an awesome heart too it seemed, caring so intensely for his friends well being over his own.
Who would want to hurt him like that?
[Oh and If you haven't seen our facebook page, Benji thinks Sean should be Liam Hemsworth (Logan's brother for my Elite fans ;P) and Quinn by Andrew Garfield.....thoughts? <3]
