I guess I had forgotten about Easter. I don't know why I always forgot the dates of these holidays when they were so commercialized. I didn't celebrate Easter however but Max's family did. He woke me up Sunday morning by getting out of bed. "It's Easter Sunday." He groaned as he sat up. He must've seen the question marks coming out of my head. "You know Easter. Too remember Jesus Christ's crucifixion."
"I'm Jewish remember. I don't know these things." I knew Easter was very commercialized though. Something about a rabbit and eggs.
"Whatever. We have too go too church today. Do you want too come?" He asked me.
I weighed my options. I could either sit at home alone or go learn about Jesus's crucifixion. I really couldn't care less about that, but after spending the first day of Passover all alone and bored I decided I would go.
Max made me put on one of his suits and then I looked at myself in the mirror. It had been a long time since I wore a suit. Max walked over and kissed my cheek. "You look handsome." He said.
"Thanks..."
"What? Do you not think its true?" He asked me. I shook my head and he sighed, "You always look handsome." Then he pulled me into a kiss. We were still kissing when Maggie walked in.
"Sheesh, is all you guys do make out?" She asked us. Her dirty blonde hair was in curls and she was wearing a powder blue dress.
"Sometimes." Said Max letting go of me. Now that Maggie knew our secret we only had to worry about Morgan and Mr. Jones.
"Come on, we're going too be late." She informed us. We all walked downstairs and got in the car and drove too the church. The church was just a building where everyone say in pews and a man stood at the front and talked.
He mostly just read from the bible the whole time and I pretended to be very interested. I honestly didn't understand half of what he was saying though. After we read through the section about Jesus's crucifixion the man talked about his opinions or something. I was starting to think staying home would've been the better option.
After church ended we walked back out into the car and Max's family asked me what I learned in church. I tried too give the right answers, but I really had no idea what too say. Max tried too mouth me the answers. At one point he tried to say, "Jesus is the son of God" but reading lips wasn't my strong suit. I thought he said, "Jesus owned a lot of hogs."
Max's parents didn't ask any more questions after that because apparently Jesus did not own a lot of hogs. When we got back to Max's house his parents told us they needed to hide Easter eggs for Max's cousins who were coming over soon. I didn't know what an Easter egg was.
Max took me upstairs and took me too his room where he shut the door and laughed at me. "Seriously Wynter? Jesus owned a lot of hogs?" He laughed.
I felt my face burn red from embarrassment, "H-hey that's not fair! I just learned about him today."
Max smiled and sat down on his bed looking at me. "I know, it's just funny." He said laughing.
I sat down next too him and sighed, could I do anything right? "What's an Easter egg?" I asked him.
"You really have never celebrated Easter?" He asked looking at me.
I shook me head, "No, why would I? It's in the middle of Passover. I wouldn't have time for it." I said looking at him. His blue eyes seemed too be shining with happiness and his blond hair fell perfectly.
"True." He thought for a moment, "You hide Easter Egg's in the yard and then you go search for them. Whoever gets the most wins." He said smiling. "My mom alway hides them extra hard and it's pretty fun."
"So basically you just look for eggs?" I asked him.
He nodded, "They're plastic Eggs and you put them in a basket. It's fun, you'll like it." He said smiling. Just then there was a knock on the door.
"I'll get it!" Called Maggie from out in the hallway. We heard her run down the stairs and then answer the door.
"Come on, let's go see my cousins." He said smiling. We walked downstairs and Max introduced me too his aunt, uncle and three cousins. His cousins were all short with brunette hair. One was about twelve and she looked stick thin. The youngest was slightly overweight and he was about five. The middle child was a little chubby, she looked about seven. Max's uncle had a big black beard and his aunt was a pretty heavy woman. I had met them before.
After the introductions and time talking was over Morgan told us to get our baskets too go Easter egg hunting. "You're going whether you like it or not." Stated Max as he handed me a basket.
"So I just look for Eggs?" I asked him.
The seven year old cousin looked at me and laughed, "You don't even know how to hunt for Easter eggs?" She asked me laughing.
Max rolled his eyes, "Just ignore them. They're all little brats anyways." He said. I was already planning on doing that. We all walked out too the backyard where the eggs were hidden.
"This'll be fun." Said Maggie smiling. Everyone hunted for eggs except Max's parents, I guess it was because they hid them.
"On your mark, get set, go!" Said Morgan smiling. Then we all went too search for Easter eggs. "Whoever finds the golden egg gets a chocolate bunny!" Morgan added smiling.
I quickly found the eggs that Max was talking about. They were just multicolored plastic eggs. It felt kind of weird too be searching for eggs throughout the backyard, but I did it anyways.
I had been searching for awhile and that's when I saw the golden egg. It was in the downspout from the gutter. I knelt down and pulled it out and put it in my basket. "That's good for your first hunt." Said Maggie.
I stood up and smiled looking at her. "Thanks." I said. She was a pretty girl, I was surprised she didn't have a boyfriend.
"You're welcome." She said skipping off. I watched her hair bounce as she went across the yard too her mom.
"Wynter found the golden egg!" Announced Morgan smiling. She seems really happy today.
We all walked over and she gave me a chocolate bunny. "Congratulations Wynter." Said Max winking at me.
I just laughed, "Thanks." I said. After that we all went inside and Max and I went upstairs too his room. "Do you want some of this chocolate bunny?" I asked him.
"Well duh! Of course I do." He said laughing. I sat down on his bed and broke the chocolate in half.
"Here you go." I said smiling as I handed it too him.
"Thank you Wynter." He said sitting down next too me and putting an arm around me. "I love you."
"I love you too." I said taking a bite of the chocolate.
"How was your first egg hunt?" He asked me.
I shrugged, "It was pretty fun. I got chocolate out of it." I said grinning.
"You did good." He said kidding me softly. "For a first timer."
"Well, maybe I'll improve over the next few years." I said laughing.
"You probably will. I'll be proud of you." He said smiling. It made me happy too think that we'd do this again next year. A tradition with my best friend.
