A YEAR LATER…
‘So…’
She started saying as she put down the bags in her hands on the pavement.
‘…this is goodbye?’
She looked down at the ground refusing making eye contact.
‘You know it’s not.’
I replied, smiling.
Her face lit up and suddenly, I was within a tight gentle hug.
Her sniffs and the quivering of her shoulders told me she was crying.
I held her back tighter.
‘Shhhh…it’s okay…please don’t cry…you know this won’t be the last you’ll ever see me…don’t make it feel like we’ll never see each other again.’
‘I know. But. It’s just. I’m just kinda. Not used to seeing you away from the hospital.’
She admitted amid her sobs.
‘AwwAlli.’
I held either her shoulders and looked at her eyes…big and blue…and wet with tears.
She had the most fascinating pair of eyes I’d ever seen.
And my heart aches to see them well-up with tears.
Clearly, I can see now.
My eyesight came back to me, fortunately, after a year of chemo therapy, non-stop supplement intake and other medical mess.
And with the help of the anonymous yet super generous donor of my recovery.
Whoever they are, I owe them a lot.
Never in my dreams did I ever think of receiving that amount.
But what really got me through it all was my brother’s love, Alli’s care and Kat’s annoying-yet-still-very-helpful comical magic.
And trust me, leaving them was not easy.
It’s like leaving home.
‘I’ll miss you.’
I whispered to her as I locked my sight to hers.
‘I’ll miss you too you little a-hole.’
She produced a smile amid her tears.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, entangling arms found their way to my waist.
‘If you leave, I’ll blind you.’
‘Oh, Kat.’
Feeling her warm body pressing against my back, a sincere smile crept across my lips.
‘I will, I swear.’
Her shaky voice warned.
‘Are you crying?’
I asked worried.
‘No I’m not!’
She retorted and then sobbed like a baby.
‘I’ll come visit every day. I promise.’
I reassured her.
I felt her removing her arms away from my body and I turned around facing her.
‘Make sure you do, I’ll blind your brother next if you don’t.’
She wiped her nose and then afterwards glared at my brother who was standing by the car.
Greg, in response, went inside the vehicle fearing for his safety, I presume.
‘C’mon! you won’t!’
‘Oh believe me, I will.’
Her stare towards the car remained intense, emphasizing her warning, I guess.
‘Oh, ignore her Niall.’
Alli chimed in handing me the bags she held earlier.
‘Are you sure you’re okay?’
She asked with her usual worried voice.
‘Never better.’
I answered gripping the handles of the bags.
As I started walking away from the hospital walls, a mild summer afternoon breeze welcomed my skin.
I inhaled deep, taking in the earthy aroma.
Iremember this scent.
I guess, it will be engrained on my brain for the rest of my life.
This smell…the smell of the sun sizzling down on everything it could shine on.
I remember this familiar scent when I was blinded by a stupid prank…when I hit rock bottom.
Once again, the same scent welcomes me as i have been healed…when I got through it all.
Greg gestures me to come inside the car.
But before I obeyed him, I turned around and faced the two women in white coats standing in front of a big white building.
I smiled and waved them goodbye.
Dad’s right.
‘There IS a rainbow after every storm.’
